The supreme God Vishnu comes down to earth, from time to time, when righeousness takes a back seat, and evil forces hold the sway. He destroys the evil forces and establishes the rule of righteousness. There are many such incarnations of Vishnu. shrImad bhAgavataM records 22 incarnations of Vishnu.
