anvayaH:

jalavihAraparAjayibhiH sakhibhiH spR^idhA IritavAriparishritaM AkulalocanaM smitaM amuShya vadanaM ka~ncana vibhramam Adadhe hi.

anvayArthaH:

jalavihAraparAjayibhiH = By those who were defeated in water sports sakhibhiH = friends spR^idhA = out of rivalry IritavAriparishritaM = drenched by the water thrown AkulalocanaM = having apparently discomforted eyes smitaM = having a smile amuShya = of this vAsudeva vadanaM = face ka~ncana = of some kind vibhramam = lustre Adadhe = had hi = surely.

Summary:

Drenched by the water thrown out of rivalry by those friends who were defeated in water sports, the smiling face of vAsudeva having apparently discomforted eyes, was surely resplendent with some kind of special lustre.

anvayaH:

saH plavanatejasi na kevalaM tadA sakalAn janAn hanta vijitavAn [AsIt] [kintu] hanumattanau prabhunideshakaraH saH vAlisutAdikAn jigAya nanu..

anvayArthaH:

saH = that vAsudeva plavanatejasi = in the art of jumping long distances na kevalaM = not only tadA = as a brahmin boy sakalAn janAn = everyone hanta = easily vijitavAn AsIt = surpassed kintu = but hanumattanau = during the incarnation as Hanuman prabhunideshakaraH = executing the order of Rama (by way of jumping over the ocean to find Sita) saH = that Hanuman vAlisutAdikAn = angada, the son of vAli and other monkeys jigAya = won nanu = did he not?

Summary:

Not only did vAsudeva easily surpass everyone in the art of jumping long distances in this birth as a brahmin boy but also during his previous incarnation as Hanuman where he easily surpassed other monkeys like angada, the son of vAli in executing the order of Rama by way of jumping over the ocean to find Sita.

anvayaH:

saH ayaM yiyAsitaM padaM udIrya javena drutasakhiShu ayatnatayA puraHsaraH abhavat iti na vismayaH hi asau manojavajit pavanaH nanu.

anvayArthaH:

saH = That playful ayaM = vAsudeva yiyAsitaM = finishing padaM = point udIrya = after indicating javena = speedily drutasakhiShu = among his friends in the race ayatnatayA = without effort puraHsaraH = first abhavat = became iti = this na = not vismayaH = a wonder hi = because asau = this vAsudeva manojavajit = who can beat even the speed of mind pavanaH = incarnation of Lord Pavana (vAyu) nanu = is he not?

Summary:

That playful vAsudeva stood first without any effort among his friends in the race who ran speedily as soon as the finishing point is announced. This feat is no wonder. Is he not the incarnation of Lord vAyu, who can even beat the speed of mind?

anvayaH:

atho sukhI saH adhyayanoparamAntare vayasi anadhikaiH adhikaiH ca bahubhiH paTubhiH sakhibhiH vaTubhiH samam guroH anikaTe vijahAra ..

anvayArthaH:

atho = During the study of Vedas; sukhI = the every happy; saH = vAsudeva; adhyayanoparamAntare= during the lessons; vayasi = in age; anadhikaiH = equals; adhikaiH = seniors; ca = also; bahubhiH = many; paTubhiH = adept in sports; sakhibhiH = friends; vaTubhiH = celibates; samam = along with guroH = from Guru anikaTe = not near vijahAra = played.

Summary:

When at school studying Vedas, the ever happy vAsudeva used to play at the end of the study time with many celibate-friends of his age and also his seniors, who were very adept in sports, at places far off from the Guru’s place.

karatale khalu kandukavat sadA sakalayA kalayA saha vidyayA .

aridhareNa samaM sphuritaM guroH manasi tasya viDambayataH janAn .

anvayaH:

janAn viDambayataH tasya guroH manasi sadA sakalayA vidyayA kalayA saha aridhareNa samaM karatale kandukavat sphuritaM khalu.

anvayArthaH:

janAn = Ignorant people viDambayataH = pretending tasya = of his guroH = Guru of all manasi = in the mind sadA = always sakalayA = all vidyayA = Vedic learning kalayA saha = along with other arts such as singing and music aridhareNa = the beholder of discus (nArAyaNa) samaM = along with karatale = in the palm kandukavat = like a ball sphuritaM = flash khalu = truly.

Summary:

Truly, being the guru of all, the entire Vedic learning along with other arts such as singing and music including bhagavAn nArAyaNa(the beholder of chakra(discus)) who is cheifly extolled by them, always flash in the mind of this vAsudeva as clearly as one would see a ball held in his palm. Still, he undertook Vedic study, pretending like an ignorant person.

anvayaH:

yaccaraNareNuH girishagurvamarendramukhaiH surAdhipaiH cha adhAri ChalamAnuShaH saH xitisurA~NghryabhivandanapUrvakaM adhyayanaM vidadhe.

anvayArthaH:

yaccaraNareNuH = The dust of whose feet; girishagurvamarendramukhaiH = by the likes of Shiva, Brihaspati, Indra etc; surAdhipaiH cha = even the greatest among demi-gods adhAri = was applied;ChalamAnuShaH = disguised as a normal human being saH = that vAyu xitisurA~NghryabhivandanapUrvakaM = by falling at the feet of a Guru adhyayanaM = vedic study vidadhe = undertook.

Summary:

Though vAsudeva is the incarnation of Lord Vayu, the dust beneath whose feet is applied to heads by even the greatest among demi-gods like Shiva, Brihaspati, Indra etc., he did not reveal his true nature to anyone. Acting like a normal human being he undertook the study of the Vedas by falling at the feet of a Guru.

samucitaM caritaM mahatAM idaM sumanasaH manasA iShTaM apUjayan ..

anvayaH:

dvijakumArapadaM garuDatuNDaM iva pratipannavAn saH mamAra ca sumanasaH mahatAM samucitaM caritaM = of the noble idaM = this = celestials manasA = heartily iShTaM = liked apUjayan = worshipped.

anvayArthaH:

dvijakumArapadaM = The foot of the child vAsudeva; garuDatuNDaM = the beak of an eagle; iva = like; pratipannavAn = felt; saH = that snake-demon; mamAra = died; ca = and; samucitaM = appropriate; caritaM = act; mahatAM = of the noble; idaM = this; sumanasaH = celestials; manasA = heartily; iShTaM = dear to; apUjayan = worshipped.

Summary:

That snake-demon found the foot of the child vAsudeva to be the beak of the celestial eagle (garuDa) and died (after being crushed under his foot). The celestials heartily worshiped vAsudeva for performing this appropriate act which is very dear to the noble.

saH tvaritaM udyatavistR^itamastakaH [san] yadA avixatam enaM pratidadaMsha [tadA]

prabhupadAruNacArutarA~NgulIvihR^itipiShTatanuH [san] pratatAma.

anvayArthaH:

saH = That snake demon; tvaritaM = quickly; udyatavistR^itamastakaH san = having raised his wide hood; yadA = when avixatam = unscatheable enaM = this vAsudeva pratidadaMsha =bit; tadA = then; prabhupadAruNacArutarA~NgulIvihR^itipiShTatanuH san = having crushed by the tender pink fingers of the foot of the adept vAsudeva; pratatAma = struggled.

Summary:

That snake demon, having quickly raised his wide hood, bit the unscatheable vAsudeva. He then struggled after being crushed by the tender pink fingers of the foot of the the adept vAsudeva.

kvacit amuM nijighAMsuH ashAntimAn upasasarpa saH sarpamayaH asuraH .

anvayaH:

ashAntimAn yaH sarpamayaH asuraH aviralaiH garaloShmabhiH AkulIkR^itasamastajanaH vicacAra .

saH kvacit amuM nijighAMsuH [san] upasasarpa .

anvayArthaH:

ashAntimAn = untamable by any antidotes yaH = who sarpamayaH = in snake form asuraH = demon aviralaiH = strong garaloShmabhiH = with poisonous fumes AkulIkR^itasamastajanaH = causing fear to one and all vicacAra = roamed saH = that demon kvacit = once amuM = child vAsudeva nijighAMsuH [san] = with an intention to kill upasasarpa = approached.

Summary:

A demon in snake-form, untamable by any antidotes, with strong and poisonous fumes, who roamed by causing fear to one and all once approached the child vAsudeva with an intention to kill him.

bhuvanabhartuH aho svanigUhanaM surasabhAsu kutUhalaM Atanot ..

anvayaH:

aki~ncanavat sapaTakhaNDaM svavibhavAnucitaM kvacit caraNAdikaM bhuvanabhartuH svanigUhanaM surasabhAsu kutUhalaM Atanot aho .

anvayArthaH:

aki~ncanavat = Like a poor person sapaTakhaNDaM = wearing a loin cloth svavibhavAnucitaM = not befitting his grandeur kvacit = to some lonely place caraNAdikaM = wanderings etc bhuvanabhartuH = the Lord of the worlds svanigUhanaM = self-concealment surasabhAsu = in the courts of the celestials kutUhalaM = wonder Atanot = caused aho = oh!.

Summary:

Wearing a loin cloth like a poor person, the child vAsudeva used to wander in lonely places in a manner not befitting his grandeur. This self-concealment of the Lord of the worlds caused great wonder in the courts of the celestials.
