kva nu yiyAsasi tAta na sAMprataM svajanasantyajanaM tava sAmprataM iti vibhuH pathikaiH uditaH vrajan smitaM anAkulaM uttaraM Atanot.

anvayaH:

tAta kva nu yiyAsasi sAMprataM tava svajanasantyajanaM na sAmprataM iti pathikaiH uditaH vrajan vibhuH [saH] anAkulaM smitaM uttaraM Atanot.

anvayArthaH:

tAta = O’ son! kva nu = where are you yiyAsasi = desiring to go? sAMprataM = at this time tava = your svajanasantyajanaM = leaving your parents na = not sAmprataM = appropriate iti = thus pathikaiH = by the wayfarers uditaH = told vrajan = while going vibhuH = capable saH = vAsudeva anAkulaM = confident smitaM = smile uttaraM = answer Atanot = gave.

Summary:

“O’ son, where are you desiring to go? It is not appropriate for you to leave your parents and go out at this time”. When the wayfarers spoke thus, the fearless vAsudeva, gave a confident smile in reply and walked ahead.

anvaya:

saH bAlakaH nR^ibhiH raNataH sharaNataH svajanatApagamAgamasa~NgamapratisabhAjitapUrvakasambhrame jananI aviduShI iti niragAt.

anvayArtha:

saH = that bAlakaH = vAsudeva nR^ibhiH = by people raNataH = noisy sharaNataH = from house svajanatA = of relatives apagama = going out Agama = coming in sa~Ngama = meeting pratisabhAjitapUrvaka = greeting etc sambhrame = excitement jananI = mother aviduShI = will not notice iti = knowing thus niragAt = went out.

Summary:

The relative’s house was noisy with people coming in and going out, meeting each other and exchanging greetings. Knowing that his mother will not notice him in such a festive excitement, the little vAsudeva went out of the house.

anvayArtha:

atha = after some years kadAcana = one day sundara = beautiful nandana = son smita = smiling mukhendu = moon-like face dR^ishAM nR^iNAM = those who see dayitau = liked dampatI = couple nijabandhumude = for the joy of their relatives svajanaiH saha = along with their family mahaM = to a festival itaH = from their house mudA = with joy prayayatuH = went.

Summary:

Few years passed by. The parents of vAsudeva were liked by all those who saw the beautiful moon-like smilling face of vAsudeva(for begetting such a beautiful child). One day, the couple, along with their family members, joyfully went to a family function to please their relatives.

viShNudAse gUDhe api mahyAM iti viharati [sati] sujanAnAM cittaM AnandapUrNaM samajani ghanamAlAlInabhAnau bhAnau ca udayati jananayanAbjaiH alaM vikAsaH labhyate nanu.

anvayArthaH

viShNudAse = the chief aide of viShNu gUDhe api = though inconspicuous mahyAM = on the earth iti = thus viharati sati = moving sujanAnAM = of the noble cittaM = mind AnandapUrNaM = full of joy samajani=became ghanamAlAlInabhAnau = having his rays covered by the line of clouds bhAnau ca = sun udayati sati = when rises jananayanAbjaiH = by the lotus like eyes of the noble alaM = fully vikAsaH = bloom labhyate = gotten nanu = this is true.

Summary

In this way, when the chief aide of viShNu was moving, though inconspicuously, on the earth, the minds of the noble were full of joy. Will not the lotus like eyes of the people fully bloom when the sun having his rays covered by the line of clouds begins to rise?

vAsudevaM iha vAsudevatAsatkalAM abhinananda taM janaH vAsudevaM iti vAsudevasannAmakaM vividhalIlaM arbhakaM.

anvayaH

janaH iha vAsudevatAsatkalAM iti vividhalIlaM vAsudevasannAmakaM vAsudevaM taM arbhakaM vAsudevaM [iva] abhinananda.

anvayArthaH

janaH = The world iha = on this earth vAsudevatAsatkalAM = incarnation of vAyu iti = in this way vividhalIlaM = one who performed various miracles vAsudevasannAmakaM = with the befitting name vAsudeva taM = that arbhakaM = child vAsudevaM iva = like kR^iShNa abhinananda = rejoiced.

Summary

In this way, the child, the incarnation of vAyu, befittingly named as vAsudeva, performed various miracles. The world rejoiced on seeing him, as they would rejoice on seeing lord kR^iShNa himself.

dvijapu~Ngavena = by madhya geha bhatta kAlAntare = in due course of time nijadhane = his money pratiditsite api = wishing to return labdhaM = received sutAt = from your son iti = thus vadan = saying saH = that rich man bIjacChalena = in the guise of tamarind seeds amAnavanavAkR^ititaH = from the incarnation of vAyu sAxAt = the highest vishiShTam = unique puruShArthaM = purushArtha lebhe = attained aho = amazing!

Summary

In due course of time, madhya geha bhatta wished to repay the debt. When he approached the rich man, he said “I have already received the amount from your son”. Saying thus, in the guise of tamarind seeds, he attained the highest and unique purushArtha (liberation) from this child who is the incarnation of vAyu.

arbhakaH saH lIlAkareNa sukomalena kareNa Ashu abhimataniShkapade kAnicit bIjAntarANi smitvA yadA tasmai adAt [tadA] dhanikaH tAni bahumAnapUrvam Adatta kila

anvayArthaH

arbhakaH saH = That small child lIlAkareNa = playful sukomalena = soft kareNa = hand Ashu = at once abhimataniShkapade = in the place of the agreed amount kAnicit = some bIjAntarANi = tamarind seeds smitvA = smilingly yadA = when tasmai = to him adAt = gave tadA = then dhanikaH = the rich man tAni = those [tamarind seeds] bahumAnapUrvam = with great respect Adatta kila = accepted.

Summary

The child vAsudeva at once took some tamarind seeds in his playful, soft hands and smilingly gave them to the rich man in lieu of the agreed amount. The rich man accepted them with great respect.

kadAcit = once lIlAvasAnasamaye = after the end of play sahasA = soon amunA = by the child abhyavahR^itiM prati = for partaking meals codyamAnaH = invited AryaH = father naH = us eShaH = this vR^iShavikrayI = seller of the bull dhanikaH = rich man roddhA asti = preventing iti = thus nandanamukhenduM = the moon like face of the child avexya = after seeing mandam = mildly provAca = spoke .

Summary

Once the child came home after the end of play. He invited his father to partake meals. The father mildly spoke to the child - “This rich man who sold the bull to us would not allow me to take food until we pay him the money” - thus.

daridraH chintitadaM chintAmaNIndraM iva mumuxuH viShNuparaM vij~nAnamArgaM iva ca asya svajanaH iti naShTaM nandanaM labdhvA

taM tasya nAthasya anugrahaM eva mene.

anvayArthaH

daridraH = A poor person chintitadaM = giving all one desires chintAmaNIndraM = a precious jewel iva = like mumuxuH = one desiring liberation viShNuparaM = of viShNu vij~nAnamArgaM = path of knowledge iva = like asya svajanaH = relatives of the child iti = in this way naShTaM nandanaM ca = the lost child labdhvA = after finding taM = this tasya = of nAthasya = the Lord anugrahaM = grace eva = surely mene = believed.

Summary

Just as a poor person finds a precious jewel; just as the one desiring liberation finds the path of knowledge of viShNu; the relatives found the lost child. They believed this to be surely the grace of the Lord.

bAlasya bAlaparilambanagocaraM vanagocaroktam api vacanaM tat vyashvasyata yat janaH sAyaM vR^iShabhabAlakR^itAvalambam AvrajantaM ekAbdakaM shishuM aixata .

anvayArthaH

bAlasya = of the child bAlaparilambanagocaraM = that the boy followed the bull catching its tail vanagocaroktam api vacanaM = even the words of a cow-heard tat = only then vyashvasyata = believed yat = when janaH = the parents etc sAyaM = in the eveing vR^iShabhabAlakR^itAvalambaM = holding the tail of the bull AvrajantaM = coming ekAbdakaM = one year old shishuM = child aixata = saw.

Summary

A cowheard told that in the morning, he has seen a child following a bull, holding its tail. But the parents and relatives did not believe his words until they saw the one year old vAsudeva returning from the forest in the evening, holding the tail of the bull.
